Ruag Germany

In 2018, a huge controversy erupted when news broke that ISIS was using ammunition made by the Swiss arms manufacturer RUAG. The ammunition had originally been sold to United Arab Emirates.1RUAG is one of the suppliers of vital parts for the battle tank Leopard 2 produced by the German company Krauss-Maffei-Wegmann. RUAG delivers weapons systems and electrical turret drive for the tank,2 which has been exported e.g. to Qatar, where it was put into direct action in the Yemen war.3

RUAG is a technology company specialized in the fields of aerospace and defense, and owned by the Swiss Confederation.4 A year after its foundation in 1998, it acquired the four existing federal armaments companies.5 These, together with the rest of the defense sector, now comprise approximately 33 percent of RUAG’s business.6 The company has production sites in several countries, including Germany, where it numbers among the leading manufacturers of ammunition.7 Besides ammunition, RUAG produces e.g. communication and radar systems for combat vehicles.8
